Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk. 1). I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use. 2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible. 3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display. Any help would be really useful.

If I’ve understood correctly, you want to connect both a 2015 5K iMac and a Windows laptop to a Studio Display - presumably so you can easily switch between the two? The Studio Display has a single input, so this would require swapping the cables. The Windows laptop will need to have DisplayPort over USB-C support. The 2015 5K iMac is not officially supported, since it is equipped with Thunderbolt 2, not Thunderbolt 3. You likely can connect using Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and a TB2 cable, however you might find you are limited by GPU in the iMac. Can it run two 5K displays? 5K resolution is a huge amount of pixels (almost 80% more than 4K) and is pretty demanding. You might find it only works at 4K resolution. Another problem you will face is when the Studio Display needs an update - it can only be updated by an officially supported Mac, and I’ve heard tales of the display becoming unusable in that scenario.

I wish they would do something similar to the Samsung Dex, it’d be nice to get more functionality. Seems like they’re towing the line with the keyboard and M chips but they’re limiting it’s functionality… the hardware could support something better they just won’t provide the necessary software for it.

I assume you have tried all the ports and checked the cable and the monitor. If you're sure the cable and the port on the monitor are both good, try the following: Shut down the Mac. Remove the power cable and wait 60 seconds before plugging it in again. Plug the mini displayport cable into the bottom left Thunderbolt port. Switch on the Mac whilst holding OPTION+COMMAND+P+R on the keyboard (to reset the PRAM).

Just got one for $180 to replace a ACEMAGICIAN MINI PC. The PC was a nice little computer, but being limited to Windows really didn't work out for me. Plus because the components in the MINI PC were too closely put together, the headphone port started buzzing a lot for no reason at all. Don''t really need it to do video editing or music processing, so it should work fine for me for browsing etc. 16GB RAM, 500 GB SSD. Upgradable to 128GB RAM, 1-2TB SSD, 8-core CPU. Pretty sure I can get to Sonoma as well through the Open Core Legacy Patcher. Plus it's cute as hell. Like it better than the cube. Way more useful than my iMac G3 iLamp, which also looks good on my desk.

I'm planning my next workstation. I've built a TrueNAS server, so onboard storage is not a principle worry. My NVMe needs will be, OS and Programs, Cache, Samples and Delivery. That's 20 PCIe lanes to start with + GPU, Audio/Video Capture and 10GbE. This sees me looking at high end MB and CPU. Generally, one cannot experience any real world speed performance, because they are already ridiculously fast. I do love the idea of combining NVMe's, but CPU speed and lots of RAM are more important to me. More than 8-10 cores is a waste.

I have a thunderbolt enclosure with a 4tb wd nvme installed for accessing my photo archive , it is extremely fast on my M1 macbook pro. Should I buy buy a future M4 macbook would I see any speed increases. Would the bottle neck be the controller or operating system or software. The nvme rated upto 7200mbs but I'm only achieving a fraction of that. In the future I should have instantous access with no pause in processing. I'm happy as it is but future tech will only be faster, or will I encounter slight pauses I wonder.

Well done, inspired me to check 10Gbe ethernet adapters via Apple‘s TB3-TB2 adapter with an ACASIS TBU42 dock (with NVME). Surprisingly I could get over 7Gbps networking speed for the 2013 Mac Pro 6,1. That‘s twice the speed compared to a directly attached TB2 10Gbe adapter (Sonnet, OWC). Unfortunately the PD powered TBU42 is currently sold out and may not be available again 😢. Will also check with Belkin TB3 dock.

The correct disk was selected. Blackmagic Disk Speed Test will use the same external drive even if you eject and reconnect it - there’s no need to select it again. You can see this at 14:30 There’s also a cut in the edit at 14:55, so you don’t see me check the correct drive. I pre-tested everything and I have my control test numbers using Amorphous Disk Mark (generally very similar to BMDST), which are 1176 read and 1121 write. The same drive on my M3 MacBook Air scores 3158 read and 2424 write. It may be possible that other TB3 drives will run quicker, but this particular combo doesn’t.

Still run one of these. Ticks along pretty usefully too. Thanks for the coverage of what works and what doesn’t 🎉
